Concept
“When I was asked to redesign the whole visual identity of the Theater Basel in 2011, the main goal was to make the theatre more visible in the context of the city. I therefore proposed a mainly typographical concept, also to create a contrast with the usual theatre poster aesthetic, that often makes use of stage images. The theatre font was designed for this concept, it needed to be easy to read in both small and big sizes. We knew that the font would be used for long texts as well as for big poster headlines. We wanted to create a font that expresses the classical antiquity period, where the Greek and Roman societies flourished and wielded great influence throughout Europe and the Middle East. The western theatre originated in Athens if we consider Aristotle to be the first theoretician of theatre (384-322 BC). The font offers very classical drawings and open counter-spaces, making it sharp in small sizes and very elegant in big sizes.”
