Concept

“Hong Kong In Between”, is a book by authors Géraldine Borio and Caroline Wüthrich, and dedicated to Hong Kong’s back alleys where the stool-bag or “STAG” was developed.

For the illustrations and photographs, we selected a special local baking paper with its matte and coated sides. The book was printed using unique Chinese black ink.

Despite the strong content structure, the book appears as a visual whole. Its density, visual language and reminiscent feel are of manga. The book is compact, handy and covered with plastic dust jacket. It is a hybrid editorial format between city guide, manga and book of architectural analysis.

With a column for English text on the left and another for Chinese on the right (based on the Chinese newspaper column width), a wide middle lane is opened for an array of images, maps and quotes. This use of print space, incorporating both text formats, corresponds to the bilingualism of the book, referring to the “in-between”.
