Concept

“Poster-Talks” thinks of a poster as an urban protagonist. A poster may be mute, but it writes and makes statements. They are ubiquitous and diverse.

The project “Poster-Talks” samples and re-combines the contents from posters written in 2017 and 2018 using the “cut-up” method, often employed by William S. Burroughs.

Every poster in the “Poster-Talks” series is unique record, each recalling a memory. A poster is unique in its own right because, how memories are formed is influenced by how they are perceived and interpreted in their given contexts. The posters are generated parametrically in order to reflect the coincidental and random qualities of the recollected texts. Each of the variations mimics the fragmentary, blurry and transient nature of how memories are formed by overlapping each other or extending past the edges of the page. A second, clearer and more legible version is composed from the first - much like memories are often sharpened and re-interpreted.

Since “Poster-Talks” are on display in the German and French-speaking parts of Switzerland, the language of the posters is adapted to their respective contexts.

The sampled quotations are an absurd nonsense - a kind of urban poetry. They are a recollection of what we have consumed, what has engaged us politically and what we have promoted culturally. Together, the posters are a collective record – a reflection.
